E-WASTE IN AFRICA

Background

E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. Africa imports a large amount of second hand Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) and the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) is increasing in Africa. A vast amount of E-waste in Africa remains in dumpsites posing serious health and environmental risks. The metal value in e-waste stored in these dumpsites is vital for sustainable metal mining. ARI started an E-waste project aimed at mapping out e-waste in African dumpsites, identifying the metal value and possible strategies that Africa can use to recycle this metal value. Africa is mining metals unsustainably and we need alternative sources of metal to ensure sustainable metal mining in Africa.

A presentation on the problem of e-waste in Afrika created for the Said business school and Oxford University Map the system competition.
